Local Tips for the Ultimate Whale Watching Experience in Newport Beach

Spotting a whale in the wild is simultaneously thrilling, mind-blowing, and a little terrifying. How many times are we next to a living, breathing animal that’s 45-100 feet!
That’s the size of a 4-8 story building, except in this case, the thing’s alive! It’s no wonder that for many people, seeing a whale in its natural habitat is at the top of their bucket list. So let’s make sure that when you do venture out into Mother Nature to search for these magnificent creatures, you come home with an experience like no other.

So When is the Best Time to Go Whale Watching?
Luckily for you, Newport Beach is a prime spot for spotting whales. They migrate up and down the coast, from the warm southern waters of Baja to nutrient-rich waters of Alaska. Because our coast is their thoroughfare, whales can be seen throughout the entire calendar year. So the question is, which type of whale do you want to see? Gray, blue, humpback, killer, fin, and minke whales are all found in our waters. If your main goal is to simply see whales – no matter which type – we recommend booking your trip during February/March or September, as these are historically peak whale watching months. For a month by month breakdown of marine life you can spot off our coast, visit: NEWPORT LANDING WHALE WATCHING
Our final timing tip: No matter which month you decide to venture out to sea, be sure to book an early morning tour. The surface of the ocean is smoother and calmer first thing in the morning, which will allow you to spot whale activity more easily.

Now Which Boat Should You Board?
Perhaps the most epic way to view these whales is on one of the zodiac boats from Newport Coastal Adventure. Due to their smaller size, these private excursions get you to the whales faster than the larger tours. And once you come upon a whale, you’ll be closer to the action and therefore more likely to observe their barnacled bodies as they dip and dive. But if a 24-36 foot boat isn’t your cup of tea when viewing 100 foot-long mammals, book a whale watching expedition through Newport Whales. Their large vessels are usually better for those prone to seasickness and they are also a better bang for your buck. Book with them, too, if you are with a large group or hosting an event. Talk about an unforgettable experience! And if keeping on solid ground is more of your thing, visit the cliffs at Crystal Cove State Park in the morning with a cup of coffee and keep your eyes peeled, because these panoramic lookout points make it easy to spot whales leaping and breaching in the Pacific.
