There are some days that just scream adventure. That you know you’ll never forget.
Hitting the ski slopes on the same day that you shred on your surfboard is one of those days.
Part of the fun is the uncertainty of whether or not the mountain-to-beach plan will work out. Will the snow be good enough? Will there be enough daylight left by the time you make it to the beach? There’s plenty that’s left to chance when you’re depending on Mother Nature to deliver both snow and sun, but with the right game plan, it’s certain that you’ll be crossing off a pretty epic item from your bucket list.
Mapping out the Snow to Sun Itinerary:
Tip #1: Go West, young man!
There’s only one place that will give you what you’re looking for: Southern California. Sure, other states have mountains and coastline that are within a day’s car ride of each other, but what makes Southern California ideal is that its mountain ranges and beaches are less than 2 hours away from each other! That means less time driving, and more time soaking up the snow and sun. The best place to start and end your adventure would be in a coastal town like Newport Beach. It has easy access to ski resorts like Mountain High and Snow Summit and it also has the best beaches on the West Coast.
Be sure to lock down a Newport Beach Vacation Rental as your home base, too. After a packed day like this one, you’ll definitely want a place you can easily relax in.
Tip #2: Start in the Snow, then Savor the Surf
Talk to anyone who has made the trek from mountains to beach in a 24 hour period and they will tell you that the best way to start the day is on the slopes. Snow will be powdery and pristine first thing in the morning with less ski-traffic to compete with. By 1:00pm, you’ll want to break for some lunch and head to the coast. By the time you slip on your wetsuit, it’ll be a little before 4:00pm, the time of day when the wind dies and the waves take on a perfect shape. Cue the sunset, cue the dolphins. You’ve made it.
Tip #3: Save the adventuring for Winter
Most ski slopes are not open year-round, so it’s best to save your snow-to-surf trip until winter when there’s sure to be plenty of snow. As for braving the colder winter waters, SoCal’s oceans are never too chilly for surfing – especially if you wear a wetsuit. And who doesn’t love an adventure to look forward to during the long winter months?
Start your snow to surf adventure by booking a Newport Beach vacation rental. It’s the perfect home base for all things sun, snow, and surf. Happy shredding!
